Ghost hunters treat a sudden cold spot as a sign of a lingering spirit. In reality, it's almost always a duct leak, a missing patch of insulation, or an air gap around a window or door frame. A thermal imaging camera can find these in minutes. The same tool ghost hunters use for "spirit detection," we use to find where your heating bill is leaking out.

"The lights flicker and my EMF meter goes crazy"

Electromagnetic field spikes are a ghost-hunting classic. But an inspector's first thought isn't a spirit...it's outdated knob-and-tube wiring, an ungrounded circuit, or a failing appliance motor. These are worth taking seriously, just not for supernatural reasons. Faulty wiring is a real fire risk, and it's one of the most common issues we flag in older homes.

"I hear creaking and banging at night"

Old houses talk. Wood framing expands and contracts with temperature changes, foundations settle over decades, and HVAC ductwork ticks as it heats and cools. Banging pipes are usually water hammer, a plumbing issue caused by sudden shifts in water pressure, not a ghost rattling chains.

"Something in this house just feels wrong"

This one is the most interesting overlap, because the feeling can be completely real even when the cause isn't paranormal. Elevated carbon monoxide, mold-related VOCs, and even certain low-frequency sounds (infrasound) from HVAC equipment can genuinely cause unease, headaches, or a sense of dread. That's not folklore, that's indoor air quality, and it's exactly what IAQ testing and mold air sampling are built to catch.

"Is radon a ghost?"

No, but it might be scarier. Radon is an invisible, odorless gas that seeps up from the ground and is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. Unlike a haunting, it's easy to test for and easy to fix once you know it's there.
